The Mahou - San Miguel brewery group, the second biggest in Spain with a market share of 33.4 %, has decided to to sell its "Cañas y Tapas" restaurant chain, which it has been developing since 1999.

The 40 strong chain, which had a turnover last year of € 26m (), was sold for an undisclosed sum to the Zena Restaurant Group.

Brewing industry analysts say that Cañas y Tapas was taking up a lot of management time and the sale will allow the senior managers to clearly focus on their main competitors Heineken España, whose two main brands Aguila-Amstel and Cruzcampo have a combined market share of just over 39 %.

Zena plans to expand the Cañas y Tapas chain throughout Spain and Europe and the San Miguel and Mahou brands will benefit, via their preferred brand status in the chain.

Zena is one of Spain's biggest restaurant groups and has more than 6000 employees.
