UK trade event London Wine Fair has announced plans to charge some visitors an entry fee to this year's event.

LWF said today that importers who have elected not to exhibit at the show will pay the fee, as they are considered competition to companies that have invested in stands. The fee will be GBP120 (US$158) for three days, or GBP60 for one day.

Head of LWF Hannah Tovey said: "We have listened to our exhibitors - particularly the UK agents - who feel their significant investment in the show is being undermined when other non-exhibiting agents subsequently attend - often en masse - with the specific intention of doing business or benefitting from the valuable, high-level networking opportunities."

Tovey said the charge is not meant as a deterrent. "Rather, it is about protecting our exhibitors and their investment and underlining the inherent value of attending the show," she added.

Buyers, press, on- and off-premise staff, sommeliers and MWs will still receive free entry, as well as exhibitors, sponsors and their guests.

LWF will give 10% of ticket revenue to trade charity The Benevolent.
