Kopparberg, producer Cider of Sweden, is testing an alcoholic ginger beer in Wetherspoon pubs in the UK.

The Frank's brand, packaged in 50cl bottles with an 4.5% abv, is selling in Wetherspoon outlets for GBP3.20 (US$5.3).

Meriam Alnaman, Kopparberg UK brand manager, said: "We are sense checking the demand for ginger beer and the product currently on trial is still undergoing changes to both the liquid itself and the bottle label.

"This is very much a trial product. A decision on whether to make this brand an official part of our portfolio has yet to be made."

Alcoholic ginger beer has emerged as a potential saviour of the beleaguered RTD category after the launch of a Crabbie's branded product by Halewood International earlier in the year.

The RTD market has been in freefall over the past three years, with total UK value sales down 12% to GBP576m in the year to March, according to Nielsen figures.
