Kirin is to abolish setting suggested retail prices for beer and happoshu. The Japanese brewer announced yesterday that it will no longer set suggested prices from January next year, allowing retailers to set their own prices. Kirin will also stop paying sales incentives to wholesalers at the same time.

In Japan, retailers have been widely selling beer and happoshu, a low-malt beer, for less than the suggested retail price as competition among liquor retailers and supermarkets increases.

The company also released a three-year business plan yesterday, hoping to boost consolidated sales to 1.86 trillion yen (US$17.3m billion) in the year to December 2006. For the year to December 2003 Kirin achieved sales of 1.6 trillion yen. The group also plans to increase its ratio of operating profit to sales to 7% from 5.6% by developing high-value-added products.
