The Sliabh Liag Distillery will produce whiskey, gin and poitin in Carrick, Donegal. The site will also feature a visitor centre, the company said.

"This is a momentous day for the area and brings the goal of reclaiming the distilling heritage of Donegal another step closer," said MD James Doherty. "The distillery will be a real boost for employment and tourism in the area."

Doherty told just-drinks that the company "hopes to be building the distillery at the end of this year, which would mean opening, in production, in 2019".

The company launched blended Irish whiskey The Silkie in 2016 and commissioned its An Dúlamán gin operation at the start of the year. The gin will be produced using a 500-litre pot still in a "temporary home", the firm said.

"We will continue development of The Silkie and launch An Dúlamán, Irish Maritime Gin in the coming months while we further develop the Distillery plans," added Doherty.

The MD has held several senior positions within the drinks industry, including managing director for developing markets at William Grant.

Financial details were not disclosed.
