John Murphy, who started St Peter's 23 years ago, said yesterday that the brewer has changed hands for an undisclosed sum. Murphy is a former branding consultant who founded marketing company Interbrands in 1974. In his 2017 autobiography, Murphy writes that he coined the term 'branding'.

St Peter's new owners include Derek Jones, who spent 17 years at SABMiller in a number of roles around the world. Jones will assume the position of CEO.

"This is an incredibly exciting new chapter for St Peter's Brewery," Jones said. "St Peter's has strong roots and a very distinctive identity. It is a powerful platform from which to grow the business into the future."

Among other roles, Jones spent two years in Russia with SABMiller and five years in Hong Kong as the brewer's regional commercial director. His most recent job was in Australia with Molson Coors Beverage Co as a senior regional marketing director.

St Peter's, which is based in Suffolk, produces a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beers including Suffolk Gold and Farmers' Flagon. In 2019, the brewer launched zero-alcohol fruit beer Without Elderberry & Raspberry.
