Scottish brewer Innis & Gunn has announced plans to build its own brewery in Edinburgh after C&C Group terminated a production contract between the two companies.

Innis & Gunn currently brews its beers at its own Inveralmond site in Perth and at C&C Group's Wellpark Brewery in Glasgow. However, C&C said today that it made the decision in early-September to end the contract after "extended dialogue".

The existing contract will run until September 2020.

The new Innis & Gunn brewery should end the company's dependence on outsourced production. The proposed site, which has yet to be identified, will have a 400,000 hectolitre per-year capacity - twice the amount that Innis & Gunn expects the facility to be brewing by the time it opens.

Asked if the brewery plans are a result of the C&C termination, a spokesperson for Innis & Gunn said in a statement that the company has always "had a long-term plan to build a large-scale brewery to pursue our growth ambitions for the business".

The spokesperson also told-just drinks the brewery build is estimated to take about two years.

Last year, Innis & Gunn offloaded a 27.9% stake to LVMH-backed private equity firm L Catterton. The brewer has since expanded its footprint in France.
