The European Travel Retail Council (ERTC) has welcomed European Union (EU) legislation, finalised by the European Commission, that will allow air passengers to travel freely with duty-free alcohol from selected non-EU airports if they are transferring home via EU airports.

This new law requires third country airports to apply for two International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) 'state letters', formal certifying compliance with ICAO recommendations, which set standards for tamper evident bags and security regarding airport retailing supply chains.

This procedure will be overseen by the European Commission which retains the right to inspect airport facilities and operations.

ETRC President Frank O'Connell said:  "It is now up to those airports and retailers to work with their national governments to make their case."
