InBev and Scottish & Newcastle are both thought to be involved in potential bids for the UK pub operator Spirit Group.

In a statement, InBev said it was in preliminary talks with Clearbrook Capital, a private equity set up by ex-WestLB banker Robin Saunders, which is bidding for the pub chain.

"Clearbrook Capital is currently participating in the process to acquire the Spirit Group," InBev said in a statement. "(And) it has contacted InBev to pre-negotiate a supply agreement to the group."

The agreement would have credit terms, InBev said, although it would not lead to the Belgian-based brewer owning a stake in the group or have a representation in management or on the board.

Meanwhile, a report in today's (November 7) Telegraph said that Scottish & Newcastle is understood to be backing entrepreneur Robert Tchenguiz's offer for the pub operator. S&N already has ties with Tchenguiz through a supply and management contract with the Globe pub estate, which is owned by the Tchenguiz business R20.

Other groups though to be included in the bidding for Spirit include Punch Taverns, Mitchells & Butlers and Australia's Macquarie Bank Ltd.
