The times, they are a-changing. As newer consumers consider what to drink, Chris Losh suggests the answer for wine is already here - provided the category can get away from its obsession with glass bottles.

With The Coca-Cola Co's "test and learn" attitude to new product launches, the group's latest move in the energy drinks sector is not a stretch. But, with a stake in major energy player, Monster Beverage Corp, the logic appears unclear. just-drinks deputy editor Lucy Britner explains why there is room for both brands in the burgeoning energy category.

Constellation Brands has agreed to sell about 30 lower-end brands from its wine & spirits portfolio to E&J Gallo Winery as it looks to better align its business with premiumisation trends. Brands included in the transaction are "principally priced at US$11 retail and below," Constellation said. The deal, which is worth U$S1.7bn, also includes related facilities in California, New York and Washington.

At the ProWein international trade exhibition last month, just-drinks spoke to Australia's Casella Family Wines. The independent company is an interesting proposition as it ably competes - like many family-owned wineries - in global fine wine, but at the same time packs in its portfolio the sub-US$5 blockbuster Yellow Tail, a brand that astonishingly accounts for the majority of Australian wine sold in the US. If only every winery were so lucky.

In keeping with the wider wine strategy to pursue value at the expense of volume, Constellation Brands' divestment of around 30 lower-end brands this week comes as little surprise. Nor does the identity of the buyer, according to one analyst, with E&J Gallo "uniquely positioned" to take on Constellation's unwanteds.

Once a month, the drinks industry-funded International Alliance for Responsible Drinking, which covers alcohol policies worldwide, looks at what's going on in-market to promote a more responsible role for alcohol in society. Here, slightly later than planned, is a look at what was going on in March.

Here, just-drinks consolidates the M&A activity in the global drinks industry during March, a month that saw the rumour mill suggest divestments by the likes of Pernod Ricard, Constellation Brands and the UK's Greene King.

Meanwhile, on just-drinks' news pages:

Beam Suntory has completed the transition to its next CEO. The Chicago-based spirits division of Suntory Holdings said today that Albert Baladi has become president & CEO, with previous incumbent Matt Shattock transitioning to the non-executive chairman of the board. The company first announced plans for Shattock's succession last October.

Carlsberg has agreed to sell property at its EC Dahls brewery site in Norway as it continues to review non-core assets. The brewer said today it will offload the property in Trondheim to a consortium made up of grocery company NorgesGruppen, coffee roaster Kjeldsberg and house-builder Heimdal Gruppen.

The former head of Diageo's Africa & Asia-Pacific operations has joined the board of India's Allied Blenders & Distillers. Nick Blazquez, who left Diageo after 27 years with the group in mid-2016, was announced as an independent board member at ABD earlier this week. As well as being president of Africa & Asia-Pacific at Diageo, he also held a non-executive directorship at United Spirits, ABD's main competitor in India's spirits market.

The US division of Heineken has denied breaking the law after alcohol watchdogs in the country fined the brewer US$2.5m for allegedly supplying on-premise outlets with its draught beer system free of charge. The Alcohol & Tobacco Tax & Trade Bureau levied the fine for the alleged trade practice violations involving Heineken's BrewLock platform.

Heaven Hill Brands has lined up a summer activation in the US for the Deep Eddy Vodka brand that plays to patriotic cues. Running from the start of May until 4 July, the 'Authentic American Programme' centres around a limited-edition bottle featuring images of the US flag.

Constellation Brands has seen its topline rise by 7% for the second year in a row. In full-year fiscal-2019 results, released today, the company said reported net sales in the 12 months to the end of February reached US$8.1bn.

The Coca-Cola Co has played down a report in Ireland the drinks giant is weighing up a move to set up dairy processing in the country. The Irish Farmers Journal claimed last week that Coca-Cola officials visited Irish food agency Teagasc's research centre and the dairy processing centre at the University of Limerick to hold discussions.
