Demand for Heineken's namesake lager brand continued to drive the brewer's beer volumes in the first quarter.

Brand Heineken volumes were up 8% in the first three months of the year, the company said in a trading update earlier today. The increase matches last year's Q1 growth and follows an 8% jump for the brand in full-year results, its biggest increase in more than a decade.

The performance has partly been fueled by the success of Heineken's Heineken 0.0, a non-alcoholic version of its flagship beer. In Q1, brand Heineken volumes in Africa, Middle East & Eastern Europe and the Americas were up double digits.

Overall beer volumes for Heineken in the period were up 4%, driven by growth in Africa, Middle East & Eastern Europe and Asia-Pacific. The 4% increase matched Heineken's FY 2018 beer volumes growth.
