Hong Kong Beer Co's new product will be available in first and business class cabins aboard Cathay Pacific flights

The Hong Kong Beer Co has launched an in-flight beer specially brewed to be consumed at 35,000 feet.

Betsy Beer, named after Cathay Pacific's first aircraft Betsy, will be available to first and business class passengers on selected Cathay flights from 1 March, the company said today. It was created for Cathay by the Hong Kong Beer Co, which selected ingredients for their enhanced flavour.

"Cabin pressure and altitude affects passengers' taste buds, but by using a combination of science and traditional brewing methods, Betsy Beer... is a combination of Hong Kong and UK-sourced ingredients, aroma and necessary carbonation to taste great both in the air and on the ground," Cathay said last week.

Ingredients include dragon eye fruit and New Territories-sourced honey. The main hop is Fuggle. The 5.1% beer will also be available in Cathay's airline lounges in Hong Kong and London's Heathrow.

Cathay Pacific is not the only airline attempting to target beer drinkers in-flight. Last year, Heineken unveiled a drinks trolleys onboard some KLM routes that featured a specially-designed beer tap.
