Wine exports from Chile are expected to reach around US$900m this year. The general manager of local wine association Chilevid, Rodrigo Ballivan, said yesterday (21 February) that exports could even break the US$1bn barrier in 2006.

The country's wine producers and exporters are due to launch a promotional campaign in 20 countries this year, focussing primarily on the US and the UK. Around US$3.2m will be invested in the campaigns, which will also run in Germany, Ireland, Russia, Canada, Japan and South Korea.

Chilean wine producer and exporter Vian Errazuriz posted a 90% rise in exports in value terms last year. The company is looking to enter new markets in eastern Europe and Asia and hopes to strengthen its presence in South America and western and central Europe. Another wine exporter, Vina Montes, saw exports leap by 20% last year, and expects a similar increase this year.
