Henkell & Co is to change its name to Henkell Freixenet to mark its majority purchase of Spanish sparkling wine maker Freixenet.

The new name will be effective from 1 January, Henkell said today. Henkell and Freixenet's joint operations in the US and UK will be known as Freixenet-Mionetto and Freixenet-Copestick, respectively.

Mionetto is Henkell's leading Prosecco brand, which has a large footprint in the US, while Copestick comes from the Henkell-owned Copestick Murray wine company based in the UK.

Copestick Murray announced its name change and plan to merge with Freixenet earlier this month.

In early-August, Henkell bought a near-51% stake in privately-held Freixenet. The German sparkling wine giant, owned by Dr Oetker, acquired 50.67% of cava giant Freixenet's shares from the Hevia and Bonet families.

However, following a capital increase by Freixenet president José Ferrer Sala, he and fellow shareholder José Luis Bonet will hold 50% of Freixenet SA's share capital, with Henkell holding the other 50%.
