Ahead of the release on Wednesday of Heineken's first quarter 2017 trading update, here's a look at the events that shaped the three months to the end of March for the company.

Full-year 2016 highlights: 

  • Net sales for 2016 rose by 4.8% in organic terms to EUR20.79bn (US$22bn)
  • Net profits in 12 months to end of December returned to 2014 levels, down 18.8% to EUR1.74bn, due to one-off profit boost in 2015
  • Operating profits in calendar-year also dipped, by 10.4% to EUR2.76bn
  • Beer volumes continued to climb, up 6.3%
