Heineken is to cut 15% of its US workforce in an overhaul of its sales team.

The brewer said the move at Heineken USA will enable "more efficient" ways of working and allow the unit to reinvest in its US brands. "While change that impacts our people is always difficult, we believe these changes will better position Heineken USA for the future," the company said today.

A spokesperson told just-drinks the reorganisation will account for 15% of the entire unit but that the cuts are specifically connected to its sales function.

The decision follows similar moves by Heineken's US rivals. Last year, Molson Coors' MillerCoors announced plans to phase out 350 salaried positions in its first corporate reorganisation for five years. MillerCoors said it had recognised the "company's organisation and cost base are now out of line with the scale of its business and increasing costs".

In 2017, Anheuser-Busch InBev phased out about 300 sales positions at its craft and imported beer brands unit, The High End.

In recent results releases, international brewers have highlighted increased costs in the US from global rises in aluminium prices and higher local transport costs.

Heineken USA has recently changed leadership. Maggie Timoney replaced Ronald den Elzen in September last year.
