Heineken has confirmed that it has registered an interest in acquiring Slovenia-based brewer and soft drinks producer Pivovarna Laško.

Reports from Slovenian national news agency STA, cited by Reuters, suggested the Dutch brewer is among the bidders for Slovenia's largest brewer. A Heineken spokesperson told just-drinks today: “I can confirm that the reports in Slovenian media about Heineken expressing an interest in acquiring Pivovarna Lasko are correct.”

Other interested parties, according to latest reports, are private equity firms KKR, Bain Capital, CVC Capital and Mid Europa Partners. Anheuser-Busch InBev, Carlsberg and Anadolu Efes had also previously been identified as potential interested parties. Formal bids are reportedly due by next Thursday (19 March).

Pivovarna Laško confirmed last October it was up for sale and was seeking at least EUR75m (US$96m) from a potential buyer. Around 37% of Lasko, which also owns soft drinks and bottled water brands, is in the hands of state-owned banks and companies while the remainder is held by private investors.

The successful investor would initially take around a third of the company's share. Under Slovenian law, it would then be required to table a full bid for the company.

Cash from the capital investment, divestments, and “current positive results” would be mostly used for paying down debt, the group said last year.
