Heineken took control of the Red Stripe brand from Diageo last year

Heineken took control of the Red Stripe brand from Diageo last year

The brewer, which took majority control of the Jamacian lager brand from Diageo last year, said yesterday it will add Red Stripe to its global duty free portfolio. The lager will sit alongside brand Heineken, Dos Equis, Newcastle Brown Ale and Tiger beer.

The move follows Heineken's announcement that it wants to return Red Stripe production to Jamaica by the end of this year in the wake of its acquisition. Under Diageo's control, some Red Stripe production was moved to North America. Heineken is also to double production at its Red Stripe brewery in Jamaica.

This month, Heineken confirmed its intention to cease production at its brewery in the Russian province of Kaliningrad. Brewing at what is one of the group's oldest facilities in the country will come to an end at the start of next year, Heineken said. The decision is due to falling demand in the region, as well as growing administration costs imposed on businesses by the Russian Government, the company said.
