The head of Hardy Wine Company is to retire, the Australian wine producer said today (10 October).

David Woods, who has been CEO and managing director at the Constellation Brands-owned company since 2003, will stand down on 30 June next year.

"Being part of the team which has seen Hardy grow from a mid-sized family wine business in the mid-1980s to Australia's largest wine producer and now part of the world's largest wine company has been an incredible experience," he said. "Announcing my intentions at this time allows ample time for a smooth transition when the new CEO is appointed."

Woods has been with Hardy since 1987, when he joined the company - then known as Thomas Hardy & Sons - as sales and marketing manager at Houghton Wines in Perth. Between then and 2003, he was national sales manager and international trading director.

"David and his team have built an enviable position for the Hardy Wine Company, which continues to succeed in a dynamic world wine climate," said Constellation Brands' chief operating officer Robert Sands.

"We thank him for his commitment to the business through the integration of our businesses and we wish him every success for a healthy and happy retirement."

The company said that it will conduct an internal and external search for Woods' replacement over the ensuing months with an appointment expected early next year.
