Hansen Natural Corp has recorded a drop in nine-month profits as higher costs pulled down operating margins.

For the period to the end of September, net profits slid by 36% to US$221.7m, the Monster energy drinks maker reported yesterday (3 November). Operating profits in the nine months rose, however, by 31.7% to reach $353m.

Sales in the period reached $1.29bn, a 31.3% increase on the comparable period of last year, boosted by advance consumer purchases of the Monster brand as a result of a marketing programme announcement for the product.

In the third quarter, net profits increased by 23.9% to $82.4m, while operating profits climbed by 22.8% to $132.1m. Sales in the period reached $447.1m, a 25.3% jump on the prior-year period.

Hansen Natural's chairman and CEO, Rodney Sacks, said the energy drink category continues to demonstrate "solid growth".

"The company is continuing with its strategy to expand the Monster Energy brand into new international markets, with additional launches in South America, Central and Eastern Europe, and Asia planned for the near future," Sacks said.

He added that the company is also preparing to launch three additional products in the Monster Rehab line.
