Saskatchewan brewer Great Western Brewing Co is to launch its Original 16 beer range in the US as it targets growing demand across the border for Canadian imports.

The brand will initially roll out in southwestern US, Great Western said yesterday. The first products to go on sale will be the Original 16 Canadian Blonde Ale, Canadian Copper Ale, Canadian-Style Radler, and Prairie White through importer No Limit Brands & Import Services.

"There has been a rising interest in premium and craft beer Western Canadian imports, and Original 16 fits the bill," the Saskatoon-based Great Western said.

Original 16 is made with Saskatchewan barley and is double-aged. It is named for the 16 employees that took over Great Western 25 years ago after the brewing plant was to be shut down.

Last week, Canadian brewer Brick Brewing Co announced a number of initiatives for its LandShark Lager brand as it looked to take advantage of the summer trading months.
