French agriculture minister Michel Barnier has called on French winemakers to move more quickly to implement an industry-wide modernisation plan.

Barnier, who met wine industry representatives last week, said that wineries must consider more urgently his proposal to establish a national wine body.

Industry leaders and French government officials agreed on a wide-ranging modernisation plan for the country's wine sector in May this year.

The plan, which also calls for consolidation among France's many co-operatives, is intended to work alongside EU wine reform measures, which began to take effect in September.
