The Swedish government has defended its private alcohol import ban. The European Commission has questioned the ban, fearing that it goes against competition.

According to the Swedish news service TT the Commission believes the Swedish system of only permitting individuals to import alcohol through the state alcohol monopoly Systembolaget is expensive and against competition. The Commission is reportedly one step below using the European Union Court.

The government replied to the Commission, saying that the ban is in place for the protection of public health.
