The European spirits industry is "walking the talk on responsibility", according to The European Spirits Organisation CEPS.

The third annual report from CEPS, released today (26 November), documents members' progress on their social responsibility commitments and highlights industry activities to tackle alcohol related harm in Europe from August 2007 to July 2008.

The report highlighted the adoption of a marketing code in Estonia in March, the participation of the drinks industry in information and/or server training campaigns to tackle underage drinking in 17 countries (up from 13 last year) and the first industry-sponsored campaign against drink-driving in Bulgaria. New consumer information websites were also launched in the Czech Republic and Spain, together with the EU portal www.responsibledrinking.eu.

Jamie Fortescue, director general of CEPS, said: "The third Charter progress report proves that the European spirits industry walks the talk on responsibility. More still needs to be done by the end-2010 target date but the documented initiatives show that industry is making real progress on Charter implementation."

CEPS said that more practical and focussed assistance is needed by the trade body's secretariat and the the European Forum for Responsible Drinking, particularly towards countries where self-regulation is still a relatively new concept such as the newer EU member states.

Future targets include 75% of advertising to carry responsible drinking messages by 2010 and investment for the industry to promote retail and server training schemes and drink-driving programmes.
