GSK is ending a 20-year relationship with the UK's Premier League

GlaxoSmithKline has said it is looking to develop more "advanced" sports drinks after announcing it is ending Lucozade Sport's 20-year sponsorship of football's Premier League.

GSK confirmed to just-drinks today (26 October) that it will not renew Lucozade Sport's partnership with the Premier League after the current 2012/13 season. Peter Harding, GSK's general manager, said the company is shifiting its "strategic focus".

The move is designed to boost the group's "investment and research into the impact of nutrition on performance", he said.

Harding added: "This will enable us to develop more advanced products that better support the needs of athletes across the UK and Ireland and ultimately help them to improve their sporting potential.”

Earlier this year, GSK unveiled plans to invest GBP18m (US$28.5m) in its Lucozade and Ribena production facility in the UK.
