An Advocate General of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has recommended that bans imposed by France on the broadcast of alcoholic drinks advertising, especially those on hoardings at foreign international sports events, are legal under European law.

Antonio Tizzano has advised the full ECJ to rule that although this does indeed restrict trade, France can legally justify this ban on health grounds. Also, he has noted that modern image masking techniques are too expensive for television companies to employ at present, which could weaken Barcardi France's claims that their advertisements should not have been barred from some sports events televised by France's TF1.

The full court usually follows its advocate generals' opinions.
