Foster's Wine Estates has joined a number of other wine producers in California in an electricity conservation programme.

The company said yesterday (4 February) that its Californian operations, including Beringer Vineyards, Chateau St. Jean and Asti, has signed up to 'Cut Back California', an initiative allowing facilities to receive payments for conserving energy when the state has an electricity shortage.

As part of the agreement with Energy Curtailment Specialists (ECS), the company which administers the programme, Foster's will look to reduce the use of lights, air compressors, chiller systems, or curtailing other non-essential operations in order to conserve electricity should problems arise with the Californian energy grid. ECS then measures their conservation and compensates them for their cut backs.

"Cut Back California is a great way for us to serve our community while saving on our energy budget, we are proud to be involved," said Lynne Ryno, production manager at Beringer.

Other Californian wineries signed up to the initiative include Canandaigua Winery, and F Korbel and Brothers.
