Peru has secured geographic indication status for pisco in the EU

Peru has secured Geographical Indication (GI) status for its domestic spirit pisco within the European Union.

The country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed yesterday (6 November) that the European Commission has completed the registration process to certify pisco from Peru.

The country's authorities said that the move means the drink will now enjoy “immediate protection in the European Union market”. The ministry expects the new recognition will help to “safeguard the strong rights” that Peru has on the drink’s denomination of origin on an international level.

Chile will still be able to call its own grape brandy ‘pisco’, but will not be able to claim a geographical connection to that name.
