Ernest Gallo, who is the grandson and namesake of one of the E&J Gallo co-founders, will take over the reins on 1 May 2020. The Stanford graduate has worked for Gallo for the past 23 years, most recently as GM of the spirits business unit. He was appointed COO last month.

Joseph Gallo was appointed CEO in 2001.

Gallo has ramped up its footprint outside of wine in the past few years. The company's New Amsterdam Vodka was launched in 2011 and sold a million cases in its first year. The vodka was rolled out in the UK in 2013, with a number of flavoured extensions added to the range since then.

Last month, Gallo lined up the acquisition of multi-nation wine brand Locations. The brand is being bought from Shooting Gallery Wines, a JV comprising Locations founder Dave Phinney and Codorníu's Aveníu Brands subsidiary.
