Empee Distilleries has secured a three-year contract with United Spirits to produce Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) for the Diageo-controlled company in the state of Karnataka.

The deal, announced yesterday (26 August), will see Empee manufacture United Spirits' brands across all categories at its units in the village of Arabhikothanur, in Kolar district. The brands will then be distributed in Karnataka.

Financial details of the tie-up were not disclosed.

Any surplus IMFL from the contract will be exported under the Empee brand to East Asian countries, a Empee spokesperson told just-drinks.

United Spirits is now controlled by Diageo after the UK-headquartered firm became the biggest shareholder in the group last month. Former Diageo CEO Paul Walsh has also been appointed a non-executive director on the United Spirits board.

In 2011, United Spirits took a controlling stake in the Karnataka-based group Sovereign Distilleries.
