Edrington has released the first whisky in a new series of limited, 'special editions' from its Highland Park single malt. Valkyrie, which launched at an event in Denmark today, is part of Highland Park's new Viking Legend series. The collection will ultimately comprise three iterations.

Edrington said the no-age statement release highlights the brand's Viking heritage. Scotland's Orkney islands, which are home to Highland Park, were once owned and ruled by Denmark and Norway.

"The whisky itself, created by our master whisky maker, Gordon Motion, dials up more of our smoky notes by incorporating more of our heathery peated malt," said Highland Park brand director Jason Craig. "This creates a richer, fuller phenolic note that has balance due to the sweeter, heathery character of our moorland peat but it is a slight departure from our core 12 Year Old whisky."

Valkyrie will be followed by Valknut and Valhalla in 2018/19, the company said.

The packaging for the brand was designed by Danish designer Jim Lyngvild.
