Edrington Mexico will handle marketing and distribution for Edrington's portfolio in the country from 1 April next year. The move will end an agreement with Jose Cuervo, which currently distributes The Macallan in the market.

According to Edrington, Mexico City is a key market for premium whisky, and home to an "ever increasing vibrant on-trade and dynamic premium sector". It also said Mexico is the second-largest premium whisky market after the US.

"This is a major step forward for Edrington," said Edrington Americas chief executive Chris Spalding. "This will allow us to get closer to our customers and consumers in key cities in the world."

Edrington has named regional director for Latin America & Caribbean Juan Campos as MD for Edrington Mexico. Campos said the new unit will work to accelerate The Macallan sales in Mexico and grow Edrington's footprint through other brands including Highland Park, The Famous Grouse and Partida.

The Scottish spirits company this year opened a new GBP140m (US$186m) distillery for The Macallan and is looking to ramp up global sales for the single malt whisky.
