Serbian juice company Nectar has received a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in an effort to help it expand.

The soft drinks producer said yesterday (20 September) that it has been given EUR10m (US$14m) by the EBRD to aid expansion plans in Serbia and its neighbouring markets.

The EBRD finance will enable Nectar to increase its purchases of local produce as well as develop new products and enter export markets, the company said.

EBRD director for agribusiness Gilles Mettetal said: "Nectar would use the loan to continue strengthening its market position through premium branded products and strong direct distribution channels. The finance will act as an important signal that other private companies in Serbia with solid management and with successful business development plans can attract adequate long-term financing."

Nectar's president Slobodan Radun added: "The funding will enable us to support farmers in the Western Balkans through increased and more efficient purchase of their locally grown produce, thus helping the economy."
