Diageo is investing EUR3m into the project

Diageo is to spend EUR3m (US$4m) transforming its Smithwick's brewery in Ireland into an interactive visitors centre.

The investment follows last year's announcement Diageo is to close its Kilkenny brewery at the end of this year and move production to the revamped St James's Gate in Dublin. “An investment of this scale in Kilkenny will help bring renewed confidence to the entire region - confidence to invest, confidence to spend and confidence to hire,” said David Smith, Diageo's Ireland manager.

Diageo said the new centre will “immerse you in Ireland’s oldest beer brand; the history, the brewing craft, the future and ultimately, tasting the pint”.

An estimated 40 jobs will be created during the construction phase of the project and about 12 when the centre opens in spring next year, the company said.
