Diageo's Caol Ila Scotch whisky distillery is to become the Islay brand home for Johnnie Walker, giving the Scotch blend an outpost on one of the whisky world's best-known islands.

Work is expected to begin in the next few weeks on an extension to Caol Ila's visitor's centre that will include a Johnnie Walker "experience". Diageo said the concept will be "thematically linked" to a Johnnie Walker visitor attraction in Edinburgh that is expected to open in time for the brand's 200th anniversary next year.

Caol Ila has made single malt Scotch whisky used in the Johnnie Walker blend for around 100 years. The distillery's brand home manager, Leigh Aitken, said the Johnnie Walker visitor attraction will "add further to Islay's reputation as the greatest whisky island in the world".

Diageo said three other distilleries that make liquid for Johnnie Walker will also be linked "directly" to the Edinburgh base. Glenkinchie, Cardhu and Clynelish - along with Caol Ila - will represent the "four corners of Scotland", the company added.

Details on the Cardhu and Clynelish investments were announced earlier this month.

The builds form part of Diageo's GBP150m (US$195.5m) investment in the Scotch tourism sector, announced a year ago.
