Diageo has confirmed that it is "in talks" to form a joint venture in the Indian wine industry.

Local reports earlier this week suggested that the drinks giant is close to securing a partnership in the country. The Economic Times said today (20 June) that the company is in advanced talks to create a joint venture with a Nashik-based winery, with the search narrowing down to either Mountain View and Renaissance Wineries.

When contacted by just-drinks, a spokesperson from Diageo's London-based head office declined to comment on the matter, however a spokesperson for the company in India confirmed that negotiations are ongoing.

"We are currently poised to enter the domestic wine business in India," the spokesperson said.

"Diageo India is currently in talks with wineries in the Nasik (grape growing district) area to enter into partnerships to market a domestically produced wine brand in India."

No timescale was given for any further announcement.
