The Bulleit visitor centre is expected to open next year

Diageo has started work on a new visitor centre as part of its recently-opened Bulleit whiskey distillery in Kentucky.

The company's Bulleit Distilling Co said yesterday that the near-US$10m investment will include interactive educational experiences, Bourbon tastings and retail space. The 11,570-sq ft visitor centre is expected to open in 2019.

The move follows the opening of the US$115m Bulleit facility in Shelbyville last year. The new distillery has a 1.8m-gallon capacity.

Tours of the distillery will highlight Bulleit's "modern whiskey-making process" and will include a visit to Tom Bulleit's office, Diageo said.

"Our vision with Bulleit Distilling Company and the new visitor centre is to hero the community, culture and partners that have... established [Bulleit] as a pillar of American whiskey," said Ed Bello, US & global brand director for Bulleit Frontier Whiskey.

Meanwhile, the group's Stitzel-Weller Distillery, located in Louisville, will continue to offer tours and remain a stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail tour. Tours will focus on other Diageo North American whiskey brands, including Blade and Bow Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, IW Harper Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey and Orphan Barrel.
