Diageo is looking to spend around US$5m on a visitors' centre at its Bundaberg rum distillery in Australia

Diageo has said the new Bundaberg Distilling Co visitors centre will open in July

Diageo has said the new Bundaberg Distilling Co visitors' centre will open in July

The company said yesterday that the AUD7.5m (US$5.4m) investment includes an interactive self-guided tour as well as an outdoor dining area and function facilities for private and corporate events. The upgrade is expected to be completed by July.

Senior brand manager, Duncan Littler said that during the the last ten years, Diageo, under its Bundaberg Distilling Co banner, has spent around AUD5m on improving the distillery as a tourist destination. The facility, which is based in the town of Bundaberg in Queensland, currently attracts around 60,000 domestic and international visitors every year.

"The centre will be housed in two of the BDC's repurposed bond stores..." he added.

Visitors will also be able to create their own rum blend to take home.

The redeveloped site will become home to Australia's rum festival - Spirit of Bundaberg.

Earlier this year, Diageo was forced to suspend YouTube advertising after a Bundaberg rum ad appeared during a children's TV show.
