Diageo's CEO has signed up to a UN Global Compact initiative to conserve water.

The company said today (31 October) that Paul Walsh has joined ten other company bosses in signing The CEO Water Mandate, aimed at fostering the sustainable use and conservation of water.

The mandate dictates that companies shall continue to improve their performance with regard to water as well as encourage commercial partners and others to sign up to the commitment.

Other signatories include CEOs from companies such as Coca-Cola, Nestlé, SABMiller and Unilever.

Walsh said: "Nothing in nature is more essential to our business than water. To reflect this importance, conserving precious water resources is a vital part of our environmental programme, and helping ensure that our communities in Africa have supplies of clean drinking water is central to our community investment."

Walsh added: "I have signed the CEO Water Mandate to show how seriously we take the sustainability of our business and our communities and encourage others to join us."
