Diageo's Australian unit has confirmed that its commercial director in the country will step down after just over a year in the role.

Simon Tamke was named commercial head last November, following the departure of David Halliday, who left to join Gruppo Campari. A spokesperson for Diageo said today that Tamke will leave the post in February next year.

"This was a personal but difficult decision for Simon who has been commuting from Adelaide to Sydney for almost a year and had originally planned to relocate to Sydney where our head office is based," said the spokesperson. "After significant deliberation, Simon and his family have decided they would prefer not to disrupt their arrangements by moving to Sydney or continuing to commute between Sydney and Adelaide."

Diageo Australia MD David Smith said the firm is searching for a replacement.

"We are in the process of looking for a new commercial director, however until 1 February it is very much business as usual with Simon continuing to lead our great commercial team as we move in to one of the busiest trading periods," he said.

Tamke joined Diageo in 2012.

Earlier this month, Diageo announced plans to combine its US and Canadian spirits divisions as part of a North American shake-up at the company.
