Southern Wine & Spirits of America has named Paul Criscuolo as vice-president, general manager for North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

Criscuolo, who will report directly to Steven Dick, vice president, general sales manager - control states division, will take up his post at the beginning of January.

The wine and spirits distributor said that Criscuolo and Dick are to work closely with Peter Hickey, who was recently appointed executive vice president, general manager of the control states division, and also takes up his post at the beginning of the new year.

Southern established its control states division in August this year in recognition of its growing presence in control state markets. The company, which is the largest wines and spirits distributor in the US, now operates in eight control states, which are states that exercise more distribution control over alcohol than simply enforcing licence provisions through the usual US three-tier distribution system.

Criscuolo brings 20 years of experience working in control states, having previously worked for Allied Domecq and Seagram.

Brad Vassar, Southern's executive vice president, general manager, said: "Given the importance of the North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia divisions, we are confident that Paul's talents and professionalism will assure control state officials in these three critical markets that there will be strong continuity in our company's ongoing efforts to confidently and ably serve the interests of these three important control state markets, now and going forward."

Sectors: Spirits, Wine

Companies: Allied Domecq
