Constellation Brands will use craft cues associated with High West to drive barrel-finished Western Standard lager

Constellation Brands is testing several new products as it looks to take advantage of emerging drinks trends in the US.

The firm's president & CEO Rob Sands said on a conference call following fiscal-2018 results, that barrel-finished lager Western Standard will be available in three test markets this summer. Sands said the beer will be positioned at a "high-end" price point.

"We are leveraging the equity and authenticity of our high-end, small-batch, High West whiskey brand and building up trends of craft spirits and barrel-aged beverages, which we're seeing in the wine and spirits space," said Sands. "We believe that this is the trend for the next American beer."

Elsewhere, Sands said the firm is "excited" about the alternative beverage alcohol (ABA) space, which he believes is "incremental to the beer category". He said new Svedka Spiked Premium Seltzers will be introduced in three flavours, without specifying which flavours.

"At 100 calories, it is targeted at the female consumer, who is looking for better-for-you... options that fit an attractive and active lifestyle," said Sands. "We plan to begin test marketing this summer."

Sands also said Corona Refresca "a premium spiked refresher in two tropical flavours" would be rolled out to test markets.
