Constellation Brands has appointed its first COO, moving Bill Newlands into the newly-created role.

Newlands, a 30-year industry veteran who joined Constellation in 2015, currently leads the company's wine & spirits division. In his new position, he will oversee wine & spirits, as well as Constellation's beer division, which includes the company's fast-growing Mexican brands.

Constellation CEO Rob Sands said: "[Newlands] has ignited our approach to company-wide innovation and driven growth within our wine & spirits division. The creation of the COO role will allow Bill to bring that talent to the entire organisation and continue to fuel our momentum."

Newlands' move to COO has seen a number of other executive changes, including:

  • Chris Stenzel, senior VP of finance for beer, promoted to executive VP, president, wine & spirits
  • Chief growth officer Ben Dollard handed the role of senior VP, chief marketing officer and international for wine & spirits
  • Jared Fix assumes the role of chief growth officer

Paul Hetterich will continue as president of Constellation's beer division. The appointments are effective 30 January.

Before joining Constellation, Newlands was Beam Inc's North America president. He was one of three senior executives to leave Beam in the wake of the company's takeover by Japan's Suntory Holdings. He has also worked for Allied Domecq, LVMH and E&J Gallo Winery.
