Wine and spirits group Constellation Brands Inc. has acquired the Rex Goliath wine label from the Californian wine company Hahn Estates. The financial terms of the deal, expected to be completed by mid-October, were not disclosed

The Rex Goliath brand was launched in summer 2002, and has grown rapidly with sales in excess of 300,000 cases in 2004.

The brand, which takes its name from a 47-pound cockerel which was a renowned circus attraction at the beginning of the 20th century, will now be marketed and sold through Constellation's wine company, Pacific Wine Partners, bolstering the company's presence in the US$7.00 to US$8.99 price segment.

"Rex Goliath is a wonderful addition to our portfolio and complements the many other excellent wine offerings we provide to consumers," said Constellation Brands chairman and CEO Richard Sands. "Consumer demand for Rex Goliath has it on a terrific growth trajectory. The brand clearly has been embraced by consumers across the US, and its growth in the marketplace, combined with Constellation's distribution network and routes-to-market, make it a very exciting opportunity for us. This acquisition provides Constellation Brands with incremental true growth."
