French start-up Comte de Grasse has released its first product, a French-made gin made using "perfume extraction techniques". 44°N, which uses water sourced from a spring in the neighbouring Alpes Maritime, is distilled at the cooperative's facility in Grasse in the south of the country.

The gin contains a raft of botanicals, including bitter orange, samphire and juniper.

According to Comte de Grasse, which began operations last year, the expression uses "ultrasonic maceration, vacuum distillation and CO2 supercritical extraction".

"These methods," the company said, "use substantially less energy and natural resources than traditional gin production to acquire the desired effect."
