Coca-Cola Sabco has unveiled a new US$130m bottling plant in Mozambique.

The green-field facility, the company's largest in its history, can bottle 48,000 bottles an hour and took three years to build, Sabco said last week. It is Sabco's biggest bottling plant throughout its seven regions.

The Matola Gare site combines operations from two other sites in Mozambique capital Maputo - Distribudora and Machava. Coca-Cola Sabco Mozambique MD Simon Everest said the plant was built with a long-term vision and is expected to make cost-savings of more than $20m over the next ten years. "It is an example of how we are getting ready for tomorrow, today," Everest said.

Initially, the Matola Gare plant will operate two lines, a glass bottling line with installed capacity capable of bottling 14.3m cases annually and a plastic bottle (PET) line that can produce 28.6m cases a year. The plant also has provision for a second glass bottling line of similar capacity.

Speaking at the opening ceremony last week, The Coca-Cola Co's CEO, Muhtar Kent, said the site "is the latest example of our continued commitment to refresh African consumers, while at the same time creating opportunities for enterprise and employment along our supply chain".

Coca-Cola Sabco is in the process of merging its operations in Africa with Coca-Cola and SABMiller. Coca-Cola Beverages Africa will be the world's tenth largest Coca-Cola bottler.
