Coca-Cola HBC has provided an update on plans to replace the plastic wrap on its multi-pack cans across all European Union markets.

The KeelClip can-holding concept will be in place across Coca-Cola HBCs EU footprint by early-2022

The company said today that its 'KeelClip' cardboard topper, unveiled almost exactly a year ago, has now been rolled out in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Austria. The initiative, which will be pushed out to other EU markets, will save "more than 3,000 metric tonnes of CO2 and 2,000 metric tonnes of plastic" each year, CCHBC said.

The new packaging is the result of a EUR15m (US$17.7m) investment by the company in a strategic partnership with Graphic Packaging International and forms part of a wider commitment alongside The Coca-Cola Co to create a more sustainable approach to packaging.

The roll-out across the company's entire EU footprint, plus Switzerland, is expected to be completed by early-2022.

Marcel Martin, group supply chain director at Coca-Cola HBC, said: "By investing in this innovative new technology we are directly supporting our customers and their consumers by providing a more sustainable packaging format.  At the same time, we are delivering on our commitment to make a more positive environmental impact."

As part of the initial agreement with Graphic Packaging, Coca-Cola HBC will install 11 KeelClip machines in seven countries that will supply the toppers across all of its EU countries.
