The project, carried out by CCEP's venture arm at Alton Towers, is testing whether artificial intelligence can successfully manoeuvre in a high-traffic location. The robots collect Coca-Cola-branded beverages from a distribution hub at the theme park and deliver them to outlets across the site.

The test, run in conjunction with autonomous driving company TeleRetail, is one of three pilots taking place in industrial, retail and pedestrian environments to capture data and improve software.

Leendert Den Hollander, GM of Coca-Cola European Partners UK, said: "The TeleRetail robots are a perfect example of how we are trialling technology that could enable 24/7 on-demand logistic services and eventually be something that can be scaled up to larger vehicles."

The robots travel up to 50km at a speed of at 3mph. They are equipped with GPS technology, sight, sound and motion sensors, and uses laser sensors to judge distances to potential obstacles.
