Coca-Cola European Partners is set to ditch plastic rings on multi-packs in one of its European markets, plumping instead for a recyclable paperboard alternative.

The company announced earlier today the completion of a EUR2.6m (US$3.1m) investment in one of its Spanish facilities. The spend allows CCEP to install 'CanCollar Fortuna', a system devised by packaging group WestRock to group drinks cans using paperboard-based can rings.

The soft drinks firm will begin using CanCollar on Spain's Balearic Islands from November.

"By the end of 2020, we will have removed more than 4,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle plastic from our secondary packaging in Western Europe," said Joe Franses, CCEP's VP of sustainability. "It's through collaborating on innovative packaging solutions like CanCollar that we are able to do this."

CCEP's switch away from plastic rings apes a similar move by Carlsberg two years ago, when the brewer unveiled its glue-based 'Snap Pack' concept for multi-packs. Anheuser-Busch also started a trial of plastic-free six-pack rings in early-2019.

Late last week, CCEP reported a 16% decline in half-year sales but remained optimistic about its prospects in the rest of this year.
