Coca-Cola Amatil's plant was significantly damaged in the 22 February earthquake

Coca-Cola Amatil is to build a NZ$15m (US$11.4m) bottle manufacturing and filling facility at its Woolston site in Christchurch, New Zealand.

The plant was significantly damaged in the 22 February earthquake. However, after "careful consideration" the company's New Zealand unit said yesterday (30 March) that it has decided to continue with the new facility which will manufacture beverages for the entire South Island and some for the North.

The capital investment was originally approved before the second earthquake struck. Structural repair work is currently underway, with commissioning of new technology scheduled to commence in around four to six weeks.

Coca-Cola Amatil's managing director George Adams, said: "This decision is a major vote of confidence in the future of Christchurch as an economic hub."
